Our Purpose

The residency program is designed to develop leadership skills and to provide residents with training and experience in inpatient and outpatient clinical pharmacy practice, teaching, research, health policy administration, and medication use and outcomes. The major emphasis of the program is on the provision of pharmaceutical care and teaching of pharmacy students and other health care practitioners. Professional practice experience is offered in many patient care areas of the Medical Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

A customized plan is developed for each resident on the basis of past experiences, areas of interest and with the intent to provide each resident with a strong foundation in key areas of pharmaceutical care. In all areas to which residents are assigned, they assume the role and responsibility of "team" members in the service, as well as teaching and administrative aspects of the unit.

A major strength of the program is the large number of clinical faculty and instructors with many years of experience in various clinical specialties and in the areas of pharmacoeconomics, health outcomes and health policy. Completion of a research project, under faculty preceptorship, is required. Another strength of the program is its teaching component. Residents serve as primary preceptors to students on rotations and also serve as small group facilitators and lecturers in the Pharmacy Therapeutics Series. A teaching certificate is awarded upon completion of the program.

In 2008, the School was ranked first among the nation's pharmacy schools, and the Medical Center was ranked in the top 10 among academic medical centers in the nation. The Medical Center consists of Moffitt and Long Hospitals, Ambulatory Care Center, Mt. Zion Hospital, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, UCSF Children's Hospital, and has affiliations with San Francisco General Hospital and the VA San Francisco Medical Center.
