Who is Deanna Kroetz?
Deanna Kroetz, associate professor, Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences, came to UCSF in July 1993 as an assistant professor. She received the Leon Goldberg Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics last March. Deanna is also a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Childcare, 2001–2004.

Tobacco companies have used their financial ties with nicotine gum and nicotine patch manufacturers to pressure these firms into weakening their marketing of nicotine replacement products according to research by UCSF School of Pharmacy scientist Lisa Bero, PhD presented in an August 14, 2002 article of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled “Financial Ties and Conflicts of Interest Between Pharmaceutical and Tobacco Companies.”

As the number of new medications coming to the market soars and as an aging population requires more medications, the demand for pharmacists is outpacing the supply. But the demand is not equally high in all geographic regions. Some populations are severely underserved by pharmacists who are the only members of the health care team trained thoroughly in drug actions, interactions, and economics.
