2016 Awards Dinner honors student achievements

The annual UCSF School of Pharmacy Student Awards and Recognition Dinner, hosted by Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, and sponsored by Ralph’s Inc., was held on Friday, April 29, 2016, at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus.

The event honored dozens of students whose excellence and leadership were recognized with scholarships and awards at the campus, state, and national levels. The following is a brief selection from the evening’s presentations.

Leon Levy and Family Scholarship

Micah Ahazie, Class of 2018

The Leon Levy and Family Scholarship was presented to student pharmacist Micah Ahazie, Class of 2018. The $5,000 scholarship was recently established by Leon Levy, PharmD ’57, in recognition of the transformative impact the School had on his life. Levy served the Inner Sunset community for almost 40 years as a respected pharmacist and vital health resource.

The Levy Scholarship supports a promising student in the School’s PharmD program who is focused on a career within community pharmacy as an Advanced Practice Pharmacist. The latter is a recently established designation under state law that authorizes pharmacists with specific training and patient treatment experience, including those in community settings, to provide additional clinical services.

Dohmen Life Science Scholarship

The Dohmen Life Science Scholarship was presented to student pharmacists Kendra Radtke, Class of 2018, and Gabriel Wong, Class of 2017, by Guglielmo on behalf of Dohmen CEO Cynthia LaConte. The $10,000 scholarship was established by the Dohmen Company Foundation in memory of Sally Van Doren, PharmD, who completed her residency at UCSF in 1986 and also taught and advised at the School.

BioSoteria was later acquired by Dohmen.

Roger G. Ketcham Scholarships

Two students awarded Roger G. Ketcham Scholarships last fall were also recognized. Third-year (Class of 2017) student pharmacists Meghan Whalen and Gabriel Wong were honored as recipients of the $5,000 scholarships.

Gordon Dow, PharmD ’65, founder of Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, established the endowed fund with his wife, Joanne, in honor of the late Roger Ketcham, PhD, a School professor and organic chemist beloved by generations of students for his generous and caring nature.
