UCSF/SFGH/VASF Joint Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use in Adults
The guidelines are available for handheld devices in two formats:
1) Handheld-optimized Palm/Pocket PC version (iSilo format)
Notes
-This version is easiest to navigate on handheld devices and includes hyperlinks between the different sections. Navigation is via the hyperlinks, a popup menu at the bottom of the screen, or forward and back buttons.
-Using this version requires iSilo reader, a commercial product. The reader is available as a 30-day free trial, after which it is $19.99. This reader is used for a wide variety of medical and other handheld documents, including the UCSF Housestaff Handbook, Hospitalist Handbook, and the Guidelines for Outpatient Therapy. Thus you can get the Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use and these other documents all for the $19.99 cost of the reader.
Instructions
Step 1: Download iSilo reader here: http://www.isilo.com/download/index.htm. Choose Palm or PocketPC version. This document is a 30-day free trial version, after that $19.99.
Step 2: Download iSilo-encoded Palm handbook. Click here. Click "Save to". File is: Guidelines for Antibiotic Use.pdb.
Step 3: Open the Palm or Pocket PC Install application on your computer (exactly how to do this varies depending on your computer and Palm). Add the iSilo reader and the handbook files. Hot Sync your Palm. A new application (iSilo) should appear on the main page. Open iSilo and click on the Guidelines for Antimicrobial Use document.
2) Adobe Acrobat Palm/Pocket PC version (pdf format)
Notes
-This Palm/Pocket PC version is available as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. You must have Acrobat Reader and Adobe Reader for Palm/Pocket PC installed on your computer and handheld to view the file. These applications are free (download sites below).
-The pdf handheld file is optimized for handheld use and does not view well on a regular computer screen.
-The fastest way to find information is to use the Table of Contents. This is accessible via a small icon on the bottom of the handheld's screen or from the handheld menu.
-Most information is in tables. To properly view the tables on your handheld, tap and hold on the tables to make them full size. You may have to scroll to see all the information in the table.
