Professional Biography
Dr. Peter J. Ambrose is Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California in San Francisco. He is the Program Director for the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) in the Los Angeles and Orange County area and is Vice Chair for Off-Campus Programs, Department of Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Ambrose’s clinical practice is at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Consultation Service, and clinical pharmacokinetics is his primary area of research and publication. He received is Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UCSF in 1980; completed a residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Long Beach Memorial in 1981; and then completed a one-year fellowship in pharmacokinetics. Dr. Ambrose then worked in the Pharmacokinetics Service at LBMMC and served as a clerkship preceptor for pharmacy students from UCSF and the University of Southern Califorina as an adjunct faculty member. He joined the full-time faculty at UCSF in July 1997.

In addition to clinical pharmacokinetics, Dr. Ambrose has expertise and experience in drug testing policies and procedures in sports. He has been a crew chief with the drug testing program of the National Collegiate Athletic Association since 1987, and he consults for the National Center for Drug Free Sport. He served as a Doping Control Officer at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. He was a contributing editor of the book, Athletic Drug Reference, sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the United States Olympic Committee; and he has published manuscripts on the subject of drug use and abuse in sports. He has also given many presentations on the topic to medical professionals, and to high school and college students and athletes; and he has been quoted in newspapers, journals, radio and television. In 2006, Dr. Ambrose developed an APPE in Sports Pharmacy, which he continues to offer once a year.
