Center for Consumer Self Care
November 3, 2005
California Health Communication Partnership reports successful outreach on its cancer awareness campaign – It’s Your Life. With support from an unrestricted grant by the Oliver and Jennie Donaldson Charitable Trust to the UCSF Center for Consumer Self Care, the Partnership created a campaign on breast cancer and prostate cancer awareness.
The core message focused on partners supporting partners in mutual awareness about the life-saving benefits of cancer screening and early detection. Because national awareness months for these diseases are in September and October, the campaign spanned these months.
Campaign materials included radio public service announcements (PSAs) and newspaper articles in community newspapers, and were communicated nationally.
As of November 3, 2005, public service announcements have been broadcast 2,420 times in 43 different states with an audience of 248,287,576. Newspaper articles were placed in 17 different states with a readership of 12,903,685. If the Partnership had purchased the news article or paid “ad rates” for placing the PSAs, the combined cost would have been close to $1.6 million, indicating a strong return on investment for the Donaldson Charitable Trust.
