Youmans elected AACP Council of Deans Secretary

Sharon Youmans, PharmD, MPH, and UCSF School of Pharmacy vice dean, is the newly elected Council of Deans Secretary, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). 

The council includes a select number of the nation’s leaders in academic pharmacy. Council activities focus on educational policies, professional program administration within academic institutions, and the ties between academic pharmacy and the community.

MacDougall named to Academy of Medical Educators

Conan MacDougall, PharmD, MAS, BCPS, a faculty member in the UCSF School of Pharmacy’s Department of Clinical Pharmacy, and an award-winning teacher in the School’s doctor of pharmacy degree program, has been named a new member of the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. He will be inducted, along with 18 colleagues, in a ceremony on September 28, 2015, on the UCSF Parnassus campus.

Matt Jacobson named chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Renowned researcher and educator Matthew Jacobson, PhD, has been named the new chair of the UCSF School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. His appointment by Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, will be effective January 15, 2016.

Jacobson will become the department’s 10th chair since its formation in 1958. He succeeds James Wells, PhD, who is stepping down from the post after leading the department since 2008.

Valerie Clinard appointed director of experiential education

Valerie Clinard, PharmD, has joined the UCSF School of Pharmacy as director of experiential education and as an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. She comes to us from Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in North Carolina, where she served on the faculty for over 10 years in the Department of Pharmacy Practice.

Sali named associate dean of research

Andrej Sali, PhD, has been appointed associate dean of research of the UCSF School of Pharmacy, effective July 1, 2015. The appointment is in addition to Sali’s full professorship in the School’s Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences. As he continues with his own research, Sali will advise Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, and School leaders on pertinent research issues and opportunities and will represent the School in critical campus research decisions.

Ferrone appointed to UC President’s LGBT advisory council

Marcus Ferrone, PharmD, JD, a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, has been appointed as a member of the University of California President’s Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Students, Faculty, and Staff.

Most recent School of Pharmacy primary faculty hires, by department

The most recently hired faculty members to join the UCSF School of Pharmacy have research interests that range from the treatment of blood clots to mapping biological networks in cancer cells to understanding the molecular workings of ion channels in cell membranes. But they all share the common purpose of ultimately discovering new ways to better address disease through therapeutics. These eight are now at work in the School’s three departments.

Napolitano selects Hawgood as next UCSF Chancellor

University of California President Janet Napolitano has announced that her choice for the 10th chancellor of UC San Francisco is Sam Hawgood, MBBS, the UCSF School of Medicine dean who has served as interim UCSF chancellor since April 1. The UC Board of Regents will vote on Napolitano’s selection and the terms of the appointment on July 17.

Brodowy named director of UCSF Medication Outcomes Center

Bret Brodowy, PharmD, a leader in hospital pharmacy practice and management, has been named the new director of the Medication Outcomes Center in the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Clinical Pharmacy. The appointment was effective August 12, 2013.

Established in 2007, the Medication Outcomes Center conducts medication-related research and evidence-based analyses to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of medications and models of hospital pharmacy services.

Sharon Youmans appointed vice dean of UCSF School of Pharmacy

Sharon Youmans, PharmD, MPH, a pharmacist and educator with a deep commitment to pharmacy education and public health, has been appointed vice dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy. Her appointment was effective July 1, 2013.
